The Snowy Rail Bridge is the longest timber rail bridge in Victoria, spanning the Snowy River floodplain in Orbost. In use from 1916 to 1987, the bridge would have fallen into disprepair were it not for the efforts of local community campaigns.
As a part of the bridge repair program Mono Design worked with Look Ear on a diverse range of engaging interpretative elements at various scales across the site.
The main feature structure is designed to be viewed from the nearby Princes Highway and creates an the entry colonnade to the bridge walk, while also marking the start of the East Gippsland Rail Trail cycling route. The design is a contemporary interpretation of the scale, colour and materiality of the VFTY rail wagons – timber carriers unique to this line.
